It's funny, I think people see the Tom Sawyer of this song as an admirable character. It certainly catches the charisma of the person of whom they are singing. But the essence of the song is about  psychic vampire: a high energy person who keeps his energy up by sucking it out of other people.

today's Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the energy you trade

A modern day warrior
Mean, mean stride
Today's Tom Sawyer
Mean, mean pride

Though his mind is not for rent
Don't put him down as arrogant
His reserve, a quiet defense
Riding out the day's events
The river

What you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the mist, catch the myth
Catch the mystery, catch the drift

The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his skies
Are wide

Today's Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the space he invades
He gets by on you

No, his mind is not for rent
To any god or government
Always hopeful, yet discontent
He knows changes aren't permanent
But change is

And what you say about his company
Is what you say about society
Catch the witness, catch the wit
Catch the spirit, catch the spit

The world is, the world is
Love and life are deep
Maybe as his eyes are wide

Exit the warrior, today's Tom Sawyer
He gets high on you
And the energy you trade
He gets right on to the friction of the day

I don't know how I hadn't discovered this one before:

2 AM and she calls me 'cause I'm still awake,
"Can you help me unravel my latest mistake?,
I don't love him. Winter just wasn't my season"
Yeah we walk through the doors, so accusing their eyes
Like they have any right at all to criticize,
Hypocrites. You're all here for the very same reason

'Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button, girl.
So cradle your head in your hands
And breathe... just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe

May he turned 21 on the base at Fort Bliss
"Just a day" he said down to the flask in his fist,
"Ain't been sober, since maybe October of last year."
Here in town you can tell he's been down for a while,
But, my God, it's so beautiful when the boy smiles,
Wanna hold him. Maybe I'll just sing about it.

Cause you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable,
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table.
No one can find the rewind button, boys,
So cradle your head in your hands,
And breathe... just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe

There's a light at each end of this tunnel,
You shout 'cause you're just as far in as you'll ever be out
And these mistakes you've made, you'll just make them again
If you'd only try turning around.

2 AM and I'm still awake, writing a song
If I get it all down on paper, it's no longer inside of me,
Threatening the life it belongs to
And I feel like I'm naked in front of the crowd
Cause these words are my diary, screaming out loud
And I know that you'll use them, however you want to

But you can't jump the track, we're like cars on a cable,
And life's like an hourglass, glued to the table
No one can find the rewind button now
Sing it if you understand.
and breathe, just breathe
woah breathe, just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe,
Oh breathe, just breathe.

I've been having a bit of an emotionally tough week. I'm doing a lot of very valuable internal work. Today  it's left me with a sense of simple peace, and with this oldie-but-goodie earworm:

One of those days
That just comes and goes
It's not so special

She watches the birds
Shat rest on a ledge
Outside her room

The wallpaper old and faded
A crack in the window pane
The radio just keeps playing
Playing that same old song

She smiles to herself
They think that I'm strange
They say I'm a dreamer

But I don't complain
Though I don't have much
To call my own

She's not a movie star, no
She's not a beauty queen
She'll tell you it doesn't matter
She's not the only one

She says, "I know a place
Where I keep the best of things
I'm not gonna wait
For my piece of heaven"

"And where there's a road
Leads to the promised land
I just turn the key
Key to the kingdom"

She stares at the page
Of a new magazine
The morning papers

She walks into town
And catches a show
If she can find the time

She's not a movie star, no
She's not a beauty queen
She'll tell you it doesn't matter
She's not the only one

She says, "I know a place
Where I keep the best of things
I'm not gonna wait
For my piece of heaven"

"And where there's a road
Leads to the promised land
I just turn the key
Key to the kingdom"

I know a place
Where I keep the best of things
I'm not gonna wait
For my piece of heaven

Where there's a road
It leads to the promised land
I just turn the key
Key to the kingdom

I know a place
Where I keep the best of things
I'm not gonna wait
For my piece of heaven

And where there's a road
Leads to the promised land
I just turn the key
Key to the kingdom

I know a place
Where I keep the best of things
I'm not gonna wait
For my piece of heaven

Where there's a road
It leads to the promised land
I just turn the key
Key to the kingdom

There's no way out of here
When you come in
You're in for good
There was no promise made
The part you played
The chance you took

There are no boundaries set
The time and yet
You waste it still
So it slips through your hands
Like grains of sand
You watch it go

There's no time to be lost
You'll pay the cost
So get it right
There's no way out of here
When you come in
You're in for good

There never was there an answer
There an answer
Not without listening
Without seeing

There are no answers here
When you look out
You don't see in
There was no promise made
The part you played
The chance you took

There's no way out of here
When you come in
You're in for good

There never was there an answer
There an answer
Not without listening
Without seeing

There's no way out of here
When you come in
You're in for good
There was no promise made

There's no way out of here

There's no way out of here

This song is from the perspective of a man in prison, watching a bird and longing for his wife. I think the longing is captured so beautifully. Even before I knew what the lyrics meant it would fill me with such strange mix of feelings.

So he/she is listening to the whooshing of the rain
Let him/her go to his/her not-too-long-ago seen master
Early morning I look up at the sky
Fine pocket knife, the rough-bread is being cut
Little calf's trouble has also been cut here
Early morning I look at the sky
My little angel

So s/he is listening to the whooshing of the rain
Let him/her go to his/her not-too-long-ago seen master
Early morning I look at the sky
There is a bird, who will carry away
My little angel

I am buried in it alive, alive
I am turning yellow, heavily
Mommy (meaning 'wife'), I will write when I am free

My little angel

So he/she is listening to the whooshing of the rain
There is a bird, who will carry away

My little angel

Early morning I look upward at the sky
So he/she is listening to the whooshing of the rain
There is a bird, who will carry away
Let him/her go to his/her not-too-long-ago seen master

Hide you from the lights that follow.
My lips are sealed for secrecy:
No one will ever discover
We dance in the dark, then we lose control.

I will wear your black wedding ring.
Your secret's safe with me.
I will wear your black wedding ring.
Your secret's safe with me.

Kiss of death, twist of fate
Lead me to the arms that wait.
There will be no bells to celebrate.
Secret love needs no permission
To dance in the dark before the spell is broken.

I will wear your black wedding ring.
Your secret's safe with me.
I will wear your black wedding ring.
Your secret's safe with me.

Oh oh oh oh
Woah oh oh oh
Oh oh oh oh
Woah oh oh oh

Secret love needs no permission
To dance in the dark before the spell is broken.

I will wear your black wedding ring.
Your secret's safe with me.
I will wear your black wedding ring.
Your secret's safe with me.

(I will wear your wedding ring)
Oh oh oh oh
Woah oh oh oh
(I will wear your wedding ring)
Your secret's safe with me.
Your secret's safe with me.
Your secret's safe with me.
Woah oh oh oh
Your secret's safe with me.
Woah oh oh oh
Your secret's safe with me.

If you want to see the movie "All Is Lost" starring Robert Redford, be aware that there are a ton of spoilers contained here.

This is more of a survival strategy review, not a movie review. I thought the movie was okay, and I'm willing to forgive a few of the "mistakes" made by the main character on the basis that he sustained a bad head injury and he knew some things I wouldn't have a clue about.

I know very little about sailing or deep ocean navigation etc, so I might be off base on a few things. This movie just had me shaking my head in disbelief. Often.

Dear "sailor",

1. Your boat has a huge hole in the side. You fix it (yay! and kudos!) but the patch is thin enough that you can see light through it. Easily. You're at sea. Deep at sea. There are storms likely. THIS is the point at which you get everything ready to abandon ship if necessary. That patch job is just asking for trouble. Have everything together next to the hatch. All your food, your water, your raft, your antenna and radio and other bits and pieces that might help.

2. You watch the water pouring over  your radio in the initial accident and you go do other things. Okay other things might be more important but there's a better chance of saving your radio after 30 seconds of immersion in salt water than 30 minutes surely? just toss it somewhere dry.  And whats this with having no emergency radio or beacon on either your boat or your life raft? Sheesh. Also, AFTER  you've worked out that you can't get your radio working, why are you up on the mast trying to fix the antenna connection?

2a. What are you doing jumping from your ship to a floating shipping container just holding on to a rope rather than tying your ship off to anything? And, um, that sea anchor was strong enough to pull the container out of the side of your boat, but you're going to try and hold it in  your hand without any sort of glove to protect you from rope burn and just drag it back aboard your boat. Um. Riiiiiight.

3. When your boat is sinking, why do you jump into your life raft and 1. tie it to the sinking boat AND try to go to sleep, risking your boat dragging the life raft down with it? 2. and why did you WAIT to try to rescue your provisions?

4. You left your life buoy behind. And the rope you used to tie the raft to the boat. And your all-weather-suit, and a dozen other things that could mean the difference between life and death on the open ocean. The things you did rescue, you were lucky to get, hours after the boat started sinking. Save EVERYTHING you can. You never know when a tiny part of wire from your radio is going to save your life by being bent into a fish hook and attached to that red cord you just threw away.

4a. And what the heck are you doing in all those situations where you could (or WILL) end up in the water - without once wearing a life vest?

5. You almost forget your hat (I wanted to scream at him for how important that was going to be on his sunny life raft) - then you take it at the last minute (huzzah!) then wear it for a total of one minute in the movie (because y'know it takes away from your rugged tousled look, which is so important when lost at sea).

6. You lose your fish hook. Waaaah. Make another one, bitch.

7. Your note. That pissed me off the most. Oh boo hoo, I've been lost at sea for eight and a half days now (only five actually since you lost your sailboat) and I'm down to half a day of rations (boo hoo, bitch, you could have not eaten a whole can of food in each sitting), and all is lost. Seriously. Poon Lim survived 133 days on a life raft and he didn't even have a fish hook or the amount of food you did to start with.

8. Congrats on working out how to distil water for your consumption. But destroying the biggest container you had to do it was idiocy. Even if it wasn't totally waterproof, as long as it wasn't sitting upside down in seawater you could store water in it.  There were other ways, such as  using the plastic bags with condensation on them that gave you the idea in the first place. Then you use the ONLY other seal-able container that you have to put your bloody note in and drop it overboard. That glass jar could have been the difference between life and death when it came to storing water in the future. That solar still isn't going to work so well on cloudy weeks or in winter.

9. What the hell happened to your flashlight thingy attached to the boat? After the life raft flipped, we never saw it again, even though it was attached. You could have used that to signal the boat rather than setting your life raft on fire, you know.

You simply gave up way too soon. I didn't see this as a story of resilience and courage and great survival skills.

You really have to be able to look past a ton of survival mistakes to enjoy this film and see it as any sort of triumph.

What's the difference between "weeping" and "crying" anyhow? In any case, it's happy and awed weeping, so that's okay.

Watching Jason C Kertson play Andy McKee's "Drifting" reminds me of the utter wonder I felt when Ed introduced me to Michael Hedges. Something utterly ...spiritual about it. So first, Jason, and then my favorite from Michael.

The Kid introduced me to Imogen Heap. We were singing a lot of her songs in the car back in the days when I got to drive her places because I lived nearby.

I was blown away by this song. It first attracted me because it has little bits that are strung together fast and hard to sing, and I like learning to sing those. But then I really heard it one day and realized the masterpiece of it is how it catches domestic violence SO well. The constant looking to see if the parent or partner has "got it in them" today, and then "all at once" here it comes. It also captures that feeling of wanting to push, knowing it's inevitable, just wanting it to be over.

At least that's how I see it. I'm interested in your thoughts.

It's brilliantly done. Lyrics below:

It takes a lot...to be always on form...
It takes a lot.
I maybe not...all the time, all I've got...
Maybe not.

Been one of those days...
Safety first, don't push...what's the hurry?
One nerve remaining, waiting on one look....have you got it?
Have you got it in you?
Have you got it in you?

All at once, not a whisper, nor word.
Then all at once...
Let me have it all, let me have a battle on,
Easy target,
Look can we just...just get it over with.
It's getting worse, against all the odds...
It's getting worse.
(Guard down, floor's yours, last man standing can we, just get it over with.)

Been one of those days...
Safety first, don't push...don't push me...what's the hurry?
Cause there's One nerve remaining, waiting on one look,
One look now...have you got it?
Have you got it in you?
Have you got it in you?

Blue blue day make me blue...
Head down, quick! Take cover, big girl in a mood.
Blue you, make me anymore blue?
Long spin shout power clean right out of your suit.

One more, one more, one more, one more

Been one of those days...
Safety first, don't push...what's the hurry?
One nerve remaining, waiting on one look...have you got it?
Have you got it in you?
Have you got it in you?
Have you got it in you?
Have you got it in you?
Have you got it in you?

Red Hot Chili Peppers: Can't Stop.

This is another song with surreal lyrics. Unlike the previous song, I'm proud to say that I can sing all the lyrics of this one, which was not an easy thing to accomplish. I just wish now I could find somewhere that does this for karaoke, but I can't find anywhere - presumably because it's so bloody hard to sing.

"Can't stop the spirits when they need you. This life is more than just a read-through."

Also: Best. Video. Ever.

WARNING: Sorry, I just happen to love sick and twisted and inappropriate games. This is a review of the latest one I've discovered via some friends.

This is our latest board game discovery!! Loosely based on an inversion of the game "Clue", instead of trying to find the murderer, all the players are trying to kill Dr Lucky!!

Description from Board Game Geek:

"In this notorious game, an inversion of Clue, you hate Doctor Lucky. Maybe he left you out of his will. Maybe he killed your pet rock. Whatever the reason, you want him dead. Unfortunately, so do the other players. Since you don't want to go to jail, you need to make your attempt in secret; if anybody can see you, whistle nonchalantly, and let the Doctor live ... until next time.

Players move around the mansion, collecting murder weapons (to make the murder attempt stronger - doubly so if the weapon is used in an appropriate location); failure cards (to thwart opponents' plans); and movement cards (to try to get together with Doctor Lucky in a secluded location for his inevitable demise.) Players try to convince others to use up their failure cards first, the better for when their own attempts come."

Some friends introduced us to this game this week, and I've already ordered one of my own. This is definitely going to feature at our Halloween night sick-and-twisted-games-only party!!

Are you weary as water
In a faucet left dripping
With an incessant sadness
Like a sad record skipping
And an ugly and ornery
And shadowy dread
Lurking like a troll under the bridge
Between your heart and your head

She came to and her
Whole life was how she remembered it
She had a mouth full of fur
And she was laughing
She parked her hearse across
Three spaces posted motorcycles only
And jumped out shouting
What the cuss could make a nice girl like us
Feel so lonely?

Are you weary as water
In a faucet left dripping
With an incessant sadness
Like a sad record skipping
And an ugly and ornery
And shadowy dread
Lurking like a troll under the bridge
Between your heart and your head

Please dumb blind kind sir
Lend little miss listless a bit of Christmas
She's been a real good girl
But now she's stuck here
The world is so little and still
Mysterious and ominous as ever before
Like an unmarked bottle full of pills
On the shelf right next to the thing
You were reaching for

Swing the groove 'round here
Where I can reach it
When I get my ass back on track
I'm gonna need it
Swing shift till I get the money
To buy me and my baby a moon full of honey
Then I'm gonna turn the nagging voice
That follows me to bed and say
You suck.. blah blah blah

Ohmy!! I discovered something amazing today. I was exploring an artist new to me: Birdy. I discovered this song, "Terrible Love." But in the top comment I discovered something truly amazing - how to layer this song for an amazing sound experience!

Here are the instructions from youtube. I've embedded the song twice here so that you can enjoy it more easily. You might want to listen to the song on its own first so you get the idea of it.

1. Open "Birdy - Terrible Love Lyrics" on two tabs

2. Start playing the first tab

3. When the song on the first tab reaches 12 seconds, start playing the second tab

4. Adjust it so that they say "It's a terrible love and I'm walking with spiders" at the same time (but at different points in the song)

5. Check your timing: both songs should be almost exactly 12 seconds apart

6. Prepare yourself for a spiritual experience!

Enjoy

9/18/13 I actually layered them for myself and posted the result to youtube.

I think I posted this before a long while back, for someone else at that stage... which I guess says that it speaks more to me of how I love, than whom I'm loving.

Lyrics:

Can you imagine that
An itch too sensitive to scratch
The light that falls through the cracks
An insect too delicate to catch
I hear the endless murmur
Every blade of grass that shivers in the breeze
And the sound that comes to carry me
Across the land and over the sea

And I can't look up
Fingers of love move down
And I can't look back
Fingers of love move down

Colour is its own reward
Colour is its own reward
The chiming of a perfect chord
Let's go jumping overboard
Into waves of joy and clarity
Your hands come out to rescue me
And I'm playing in the shallow water
Laughing while the mad dog sleeps

And I can't look up
Fingers of love move down
And I won't be hit
Fingers of love move everywhere

There is time yet
Fall by the way
From the cradle to the grave
From a palace to the gutter
Beneath the dying waves of the sun
Lie fingers of love

Through waves of joy and clarity
A fallen angel walked on the sea
And I'm playing in the shallow water
Laughing while the mad dog sleeps

And I can't look up
Fingers of love move down
And I won't be hit
Fingers of love move everywhere

There is time yet
For you to find me
And all I want
Fingers of love move down

Lyrics:

I've been trying to do it right
I've been living a lonely life
I've been sleeping here instead
I've been sleeping in my bed,

I've been sleeping in my bed

So show me family
all the blood that i will bleed
I dunno where I belong
I dunno where I went wrong,
but I can write a song

I belong with you, you belong with me
you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me
you're my sweet

I don't think you're right for him
think of what it might have been if you
took a bus to Chinatown
I'd be standing on canal
and bowery
and she'd be standing next to me

I belong with you, you belong with me
you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me
you're my sweetheart

And love, we need it now
Let's hope for some
Cause oh, we're bleeding out

I belong with you, you belong with me
you're my sweetheart
I belong with you, you belong with me
you're my sweet
