The LiveCloud specs for banners are 1000 x 100 pixels. I can confirm that 1000 is indeed the limit for a banner here - anything outside of that and your ends will be cropped nice and evenly.

Frankly, the 100 pixel "height" limit is ... um, not enforced. Basically you can make a banner as high as you want, which I like because the 100 pixels doesn't leave a whole lot of latitude. I still try to not go over 200 pixels though, because larger pictures have a way of taking over the whole page, meaning a visitor sees only that picture and none of your actual blog. Which ... could also be fine. It just depends on what you want.

In any case - here are a whole ton of banners I've made for LiveCloud. Feel free to copy and use any of these that you want. If you want a matching avatar made from any of them, or want a thumbnail of the original background in full size to use to create a Theme (background) here - just let me know and I'll do my best to help where possible.

screencap RAINBOW settings1A couple of weeks ago I experimented with the settings on the customization page.


Full customization is only available to VIP members. To become a VIP member, give up 3/4 of a cup of starbucks coffee a month, suck up your bloody stinginess, and pay the three dollars a month (paid twice yearly) to have a VIP account.


Anyhow, for those of you who haven't had time (lol) to do this yet, here's the skinny on what the customization page looks like, and how you can use it to customize your page. I'm hoping you won't do anything with it as hideous as what I am about to demonstrate, though! I chose a garish rainbow of colors so that you can easily see what each section customizes.screencap RAINBOW settings2

Content Area: purple

After changing all of my settings, I went through most of my pages and took screen captures of which things came up which colors. These are shown below in the attachments, so you can scroll through them and use them to decide which colors you would like on your own sections.


There are two ways of choosing your colors for these sections. As you can see, there is a box that shows the color, and a six digit number/letter combination beside it. You can find the color codes by doing a web search on "web color chart". You can also google "web safe colors" to find colors that are most likely to display well on all systems.  [You can also click on the color square to select your color of preference - for me this isn't an option, as the slider box that comes up will only move to Red when I try to move it to any color (yep I've reported it as a bug).]


If you use Firefox, there is the Colorzilla Dropper - a firefox extension that adds a small dropper to the bottom left of your page. You can use it to find out precise colors from photographs, in case you want to find the exact colors to match your page to a background photograph or banner on your page (it gives you the color codes mentioned above). 


So - just scroll through the pictures below to see how these color affected different areas of my blog. Just be prepared to wince as you do so!

Two ways to change font:

1. Switch to WYSIWYG and used <hx> </h/x> where x is a number x = 1 

2. With WYSIWYG off. <font size="7">Here is a size 7 font</font>


I have another post where I unsuccessfully tried this, but got great help in the comments section. Oh, and another one.

Ah, I think I see the issue. I can't upload audio from my computer. Having read the agreement here, I understand why I think - it's about licensing. They don't want us sharing files here that we're not authorized to share.


However, I can't stop digging, because I've played a file on GrumbleBunny's blog. I think we can upload music as an attachment. Ah yes, here we go.


Does this mean other people can download anything I post as an attachment? Hmmmm. That's more problematic for the legalities of file sharing than vox was, where I could listen to any song any time, but could not download it. That was more like having a friend play me a song than them sending me a CD. Not that I'm saying someone can download from here. I'm not sure.... yet.

I've added most people as just buddies while I work out my privacy levels. I think I have them set now, but I don't know how to change what level my different buddies are at.



One thing I adore about this site is the ability to not only have several different levels of privacy that you can categorize your buddies into, but you can also custom name those categories. I forget what they start with - Business Associates, Friends, Family and something else I think. Mine are now categorized into: 1. People who actually like reading what I ate for breakfast, people who are allowed to know personal details of my life, people who I've known for ages who I can talk about some really deep stuff with, and my fourth category isn't being used at the moment.



This post will self destruct once I've worked this out.


UPDATE: Some advice on this:

Lori said: "Go to Buddies on your Control Panel.  There's an edit icon next to each name, where you can set which circle you'd like that buddy to be in."



Ted said: "On your Permissions page (http://my.livecloud.com/cp/permissions), you'll notice the name of each circle at the top of each row.  Click on a circle name and you'll get a popup window that allows you to edit who is in that circle in bulk.  See attached example.  This gives you a lot of the functionality you are looking for, though only per circle."

James was good enough to point out a few examples of customization at the VIP level. Yes, you can do patterned backgrounds as well as colors.

I'm just writing this briefly for a friend who wants to know how to do dialogues here.





1. Right click on the LiveCloud name up on the top left of your screen. A drop down box will appear.

2. Click on "Your Dialogues". This will bring up all dialogues from the past on the screen, plus a menu on the side.

3. On the menu on the left hand side of the screen click on Dialogs. A drop down menu will appear beneath it.

4. Click on "Start Dialogue" A new screen will appear.

5. On the left hand menu you can select participants. A Dialogue can be with one or many people. If you click here you can select from your buddies to send a message. [Note: you cannot add new people to this conversation later]. Just click on the participants (will highlight them) and then on "Continue With Dialogue Creation"

6. This will bring you back to your message screen that opened in Step 4. Write a title and a message, add attachments if you want to, and click "Send".



Voila!



Unfortunately, dialogue posts can only be monitored via email, not alerts, so any dialogues you receive will come right to your inbox.


Any other thoughts? I am sure there's plenty to say on other ways of communicating here.


[UPDATE: James pointed out the little person icon next to our usernames. Dialogues can also be reached that way (and then other peeps can be added to the conversation before it starts. Dialogues can also be reached through your Buddy list, which is available on the menu on the left hand side of most of these pages. Thanks James!]

Livecloud has a number of privacy levels and to some extent they are customizable.



There are different levels of privacy on Livecloud:



    *     "World Accessible" - Fully public

    *     "Just Me" - Fully Private

    *     "Just Your Buddies" - everyone you've added as a buddy.

    *     "Certain Buddies" - These are advanced privacy levels. You have four levels to play with:

       
         - Friends

         - Business Associates

         - Close Friends

         - Family




Every post has an option (at the top while you are posting) for choosing which privacy level you want it to be at. If you make a post available only to "Certain Buddies" then a pop out box will appear with the four options in it.



The four levels of "Certain Buddies" can also be renamed. This can be accessed through "Control Panel" --> "Your Network Settings" (how to get to Control Panel is covered in a couple of my other posts).


When you are adding people as buddies (or editing buddies at a later date) you can choose which privacy level you want them to be able to view on your blog.




OTHER PRIVACY SETTINGS:



"Your Network Settings" has a check box where you can choose to show as always offline if you don't want people to be able to see when you are online. (You can also check to hide your birthday from everyone).



[UPDATE: Ted just helped me out with a couple of things:


On a one-off basis (as you are looking at someone's name), the easiest way to edit personal circles is to click on the "gingerbread man:" icon next to the person's name.  You'll get a popup like the one shown below.  Then click on the edit icon next to the current circles for the user, assuming they are already your buddy.


Also, when you add or accept a new buddy, you are always queried for how you want to label them (in terms of circles).

Ted also made a great comment explaining how privacy levels can work.... the important point for me in what he said is that buddies can't see what levels you have assigned them to. That's good to know.


You never know how a buddy labels you (which circles they put you in, if any).  The circles are just a way for you to control what level of access to give each of your buddies.


For instance, let's say I add you as a buddy.  I don;t know you very well, so maybe I want to classify you as just an "acquaintaince" (or perhaps I don't put you in any circles).  So I put you in that buddy circle of mine.  Again, you have no idea whether or how I have classified you.



Then later that day I post a blog about a family reunion I attended, but I only want my close friends and family to see that post because it so personal.  When I create the blog post, I limit access to my Close Friends and Family buddy circles.    Since you are not in those buddy circles, you will never see it, or even know that I posted it. 



Let's say I get to know you better in the future and add you to my Close Friends circle.  Once I did that, you'd be able to see all content that I allowed my Close Friends to access.


Make sense?


You do not have to use circles at all.. but it is a convenient, powerful way to control your who your audience is each time. And you never offend anyone because only you know how you classify other people.

Profile Page: You probably entered a lot of this info when joining. However, you can do more here. Your zip code will reveal your location automatically - so you can  go in here and under "Displayed Location" you can enter whatever you want. Other profile information is added here too.



Your profile can be privatized through "Permissions" - to allow who (if anyone) can see this information. You can set the privacy level for most of your blog here too.



"Your Network Settings" has an option for hiding your birthday if you wish. Your birthdate year will never be displayed anyhow.



Where your profile will appear on your blog menu can be selected through "Personal Site Menu".



Can anyone think of anything to add about Profiles?

[UPDATE: this way works to insert photographs, but there's a better way. It took me all this while to find it out... so for a better way to add photos to a blog entry, just click here.]

How to upload photos as clips:

  1. If you are currently on an individual entry, click the "All Blog Posts" button. It will be right underneath your banner on the left. If you are already on all your blog posts, just go to the next step. If you are on a different page entirely, go to the next step, and if what you need is not there, then check for the "All Blog Posts" button first.
  2. Look at the options listed at the right of the entry. Click the drop-down triangle next to "Clips".
  3. Click "add clips". A pop out window will come up.
  4. Choose "Upload files" and select them from your computer one by one.
  5. When they have all uploaded (the upload bar turns green) click "finished".
  6. Your pictures will show. You can edit the titles of them by clicking on the existing title, or clicking on "edit title/captions" and then on "update".
  7. On the "Review Clips to be Added page" (which you should already be on) you can choose privacy levels for these photos by clicking on the edit icon just under "Access Permissions for These Clips".
  8. Down at the bottom of the page click "Submit New Clips".

As far as I know for VIP users, you can upload full sized photos and keep them in your archive here. Not sure if there is a GB limit or if it turns them into thumbnails so others can't download your full sized photographs. I only upload low res thumbnails online so I don't run into any of these issues.

How to post photo clips in an entry:

  1. Open a new window for your blog entry.
  2. In a second window click "Clips" in the right hand menu.
  3. Click on the photograph you want.
  4. Right click on the photograph. Select "copy shortcut". [If "copy shortcut" isn't an option for you, then click on "properties" and select the whole url next to "url/address" (make sure you get the whole thing, often only the first two lines are displayed). Copy this.]
  5. Go back to the blog entry.
  6. From the toolbar above the post - choose "insert/edit image".
  7. In the pop up box, right click on the box next to "image url" and paste (ctrl+v or right click and choose "paste") to paste your image link.
  8. Fill in any title or image discription.
  9. Look at the top of the pop up box. There are two tabs: General and Appearance. Appearance will give you options for how large the image will display ("Dimensions") and where you want to display it within the text of your entry ("alignment" - for left/right/center etc.). You can set borders and space around the picture horizontally and vertically as well. The diagram on the side will give you some idea of how it is going to place on the page.
  10. Click "insert".

Presto! If you've kept your second window open (with the photograph in it) then you can press the "back" button in your browser to go back to your clips and repeat with any other photos you want to add to your post.


[UPDATE: You can also add photographs using flickr, and videos using Youtube. You can access this through your Control Panel submenu "Social Accounts". I haven't tried this yet, will update when I do.]

I've spent about five hours on hoo.do now, so I thought I'd write a review. It's incomplete, but I'll add to it as I discover more.

TYPES OF ACCOUNT: Free and paid. Paid is $3 a month, paid half-yearly ($18). Paid accounts give customizable options for themes, but I've not found someone who uses them to ask them about them yet. Paid accounts also have photo hosting (uploaded in original sizes). Paid accounts avoid ads on their blog, but so far I find the ads less intrusive then they are on vox.

THEMES / CUSTOMIZATION: Themes are limited for the free accounts - just to a basic set of colors. You can have your own personal banner at the top of the page. I have yet to select them. The pages are very customizable as to layout - I can really move things around to suit myself, and add and remove stuff from most pages.

PROFILE TIP: When you add your information at the beginning, your zip code will auto fill in your location on your profile page, and there are no privacy settings. However, if you just go into your profile and erase the location (not the zip code, as it won't let you have a profile without one of those) and fill in whatever you want (I just put "Here and There) - then that is what will show as your location on your profile. I couldn't right-click-paste my profile details over from here, but I could CTRL+V to achieve the same result. [Update: You can control who sees your profile by going into Permissions, which is included under "Control Panel" on the right hand side of the page when you are viewing all your blog posts.]

PRIVACY SETTINGS: You can add people as "Buddies" there. When you are adding them, you also have the option of adding them as "Friends", "Business Associate", "Close Friends" or "Family". When you write a blog post you have the option to make it completely public, or private, or available to any of your broader or smaller groups.

TICKER: Gives a list of recent activity on anything you've decided to follow. Not as good as the "reply to" function on Vox IMO, but better than getting a zillion annoying emails covering all the replies on a post you are following.

BLOG ENTRIES: There is a toolbar on the top of the entries for posting stuff and adding photos and vids.  Yep, you can post from your phone.

CATEGORIES: You can assign blog entries to categories. They will show up in your main blog, but people can view just a category. Which is sweet if you just want to follow my photographs and avoid my compulsive list making or whining. [Edit - you can edit or change the names of categories by viewing all the folders in "Categories".] I've also made a category entitled "HOW TO" and am posting everything I am learning there in step-by-step fashion.

PHOTOS AND VIDEO: Photos and other media are posted using "clips". I struggled with these a lot at first - it's taken me hours today to work it all out. I've done a HOW TO post on it. Photos can be uploaded to the site and placed in entries. As far as I know it won't save the full sized photo in your backup files unless you have a paid upgrade, and I think that's fair enough if they are going to host full sized photos.

You can use the toolbar to post videos from youtube at least (or I assume anywhere else you can paste in an embed-able link).

COMMENTS: Photos and videos can also be embedded in comments. Sweet! 

MUSIC: The terms of agreement say something to the effect of not hosting music if you don't have permission to do so. So what did I do? Uploaded a Rammstein youtube video immediately to test it out. It's just a test right?

PRIVATE MESSAGES: Can be had in form of conversations, which to me is better than vox as it keeps the whole conversation there for you to read, rather than relying on your emailing your own side if it to yourself. Oooo, and they can be had between two or more people (but you can't add more people once you've started, I don't think)!

STATS: They has stats!!

OTHER STUFF: You can change your email address you use for this account. You can also change the username attached to your blog. 

GROUPS: Groups cost $9 a month to run, but seem to have a ton of tools. I've not messed with joining any of these.

I'm off to make a banner now.
